TAVA, a national advocacy and support group for transgender and interesex service members past and present, has recently joined the many other organizations across the world raising funds in aid of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Despite the beliefs of some misinformed or misguided individuals and organizations, nature takes no notice of differences among human beings. Hurricane Katrina placed all kinds of people in jeopardy: transgender, gay, intersex and straight people, young and old. Already, stories have surfaced of displaced transgender hurricane victims facing discrimination and arrest for attempting to use gender-appropriate facilities in emergency shelters.

While TAVA is a newly-formed 501(c)(3) educational organization without extensive resources, the Board of Directors voted to donate $500 to the Gallae Central House for use in supporting GLBT victims of hurricane Katrina. This Gallae Central effort is also supported by NCTE, NTAC, and TransFM.

In addition, TAVA president Monica Helms has made the TAVA donation site available for contributions to be used for hurricane relief. Any donation made before October 15, 2005 that is marked for ‘hurricane relief’ will be used by TAVA or transferred to other 501(c)(3) organizations specifically for hurricane relief for transgender, intersex, and other GLBT victims and their families. Contributions to TAVA are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Both TAVA members and other members of the GLBT and larger community are requested to provide financial support that will ease the plight of transgender and other GLBT victims.

To help transgender and intersex victims of Hurricane Katrina, please donate at http://www.tavausa.org/donate.html. Be sure to note ‘hurricane relief’ if you wish your donation to be used for that purpose.
